HOW LEADERS CAN INFLUENCE GROUP SUCCESS

Leadership as been defined by different individuals and groups in various ways some of which are ,as ability of Management to induce subordinates to work towards group goals with confidence and keeness.

Dr John P. Kotter, Proffesor of Leadership @ Havard University defines Leadership as "the development of vision and strategies, the alignment, and the empowerment of individuals to make the vision happen despite obstacles".

Former American President --R. Reagan defined Leadership as "one who gets the people to do the greatest things".William Cohen says Leadership has the extraordinary power. It can make the difference between success and failure in anything you do for yourself or any group you belong to.

Lord Montogomery in his book, Path to Leadership, describes a Leader as : "One who can be looked up to , whose personal judgement is trusted, who can inspire and warm the hearts of those he leads gaining their trust and confidence and explaning what is needed in Language which can be understood".I could write all day long on Leadesrship definition , but for the sake of space i will want to limit it to above definitions for now.

It is a common and core belief that behind every successful outfit, be it a company , a Nation, a Military unit, in network marketing etc, is a group of competent leaders as everything rises and falls on Leadership. It must however be noted that Leadership is not synonymous with administrative ability alone.

Have we personally and collectively asked this singular question : Why do we need Leaders? In response to this question, Renown writer, Warren Bennis says , " They are responseible for the effectiveness of organisation, we need anchors in our lives, a guilding purpose in these years of change and upheavals, they give intergrity to our our institutions" Leaders are here to stay.

Any organisation without proper Leadership is doomed to failure.Leaders give vision and organisation to a group, they maintain order and stability, they uphold standards and organisational goals. Leaders are role model , to their followers. The quality of Leadership in an organisation affects to a large extent, the sucess or failure of that organisation, hence the importance of having quality leadership --must, not --should be given prominence.

Below are some Leadership Tips:

A. Foremost, as a leader , you must have a dream bigger than that of your followers. Big dreamers inspire others to dream big too.

B. Steadfastness and determination must be exhibited in you, as it takes time to achieve greatness. Note that the begining of any outfit is always challenging and tasking.

C. A true Leader should always find a way over and around a need/challenge that comes up and see it through to logical end.

D. Endeavour to always lead by example as your team/group are looking up to you, hence you have to exhibit high level of Intergrity and Character.

E. Lastly, Success they same as many fathers , while failure is an orphan, so do all you can to better your best in all areas of your life so that your group/team sticks to you always.

I usually say that leaders who are mentors are the best types to get the most success out of other people. Influence over a group only happens if they respect and admire you for your skills and how you approach them.

Effective leadership is measured by how successful your followers become. As John Maxwell says, “If you call yourself a leader and no one is following, you are just out for a walk.” Having an effective leadership means mentoring your employees to excel, following your lead.
